Small disclaimer: I caught ZERO FISH on this trip. "Daly River Donuts" A lot of fishing and effort for no fish. But if…
Daly River Redemption
History (my previous Daly River trip)
My previous fishing trip to the Daly River last year was a fail. I fished for 2 days fairly hard and had ZERO fish in the boat for the whole trip.
So this trip was was my chance at Daly River Redemption.
The Plan
I had arranged to leave work early and head down to the Daly River for some land based fishing on the afternoon of day 1. That was the plan anyway.
Unfortunately the weather had other plans. It rained most of the way to the river, so I arrived later than expected. By the time I had unpacked the essentials, the sun had set and it was still raining heavily. I figured I would try get up early the next day and go check out the land based spot at Bamboo Creek in the morning.
So day 1 finished with some dinner and beers at Lee and Jenny’s Bush camp, then falling asleep to the sound of rain falling on the roof.
The next morning I did go down to Bamboo Creek, the land-based fishing spot. I was the only person there when I arrived, but within 20 minutes there were 6 people fishing there. So I decided to go launch my boat Flanders down the road at the boat ramp.
The Fishing
Most people know that the Daily River fishes best when the river height is dropping. But with all this rain, the river rose overnight. So the odds were starting to stack against me.
I found a creek that had an impressive colour change out the front. It was only 20 minutes or so from the boat ramp.
I could hear Barra boofing (feeding) as soon as I got there, which had me pretty excited. I tried several lures and just couldn’t encourage any fish to take a lure.
It wasn’t until I swapped to the “Zerek Live Shrimp” that I managed to catch a couple of Barramundi. I had all of the fishing action happen directly behind the boat in just a metre of water.
Lee and Jenny’s Bush Camp
Such a beautiful place on the banks of the Daly River. This is my second stay at Lee and Jenny’s and I cant speak highly enough about the place.
Lee and Jenny are wonderful hosts.
There are many accommodation options along the Daly River. Lee and Jenny’s bush camp is a bit of a one-stop-shop no matter what style of accommodation you are looking for. They have the Barra Barn, the Buffalo Lodge and the Bunkhouse. All of which offer different levels of comfort from 5 star down to budget accommodation. Of course you can camp or bring a caravan or camper.
